ABOUT US

What is DGF?

DGF audience

Since 1991, the Dundee Guitar Festival has presented an annual event celebrating the music of the guitar in its many forms. It has grown from an ambitious local project to one of Europe’s most important weeks for the guitar.

A Unique event in Scotland the festival attracts top artists from both home and abroad, DGF has been delighted to host master classes by some of the greats such as The Assad Duo, Manuel Barrueco, Paul Galbraith, Martin Taylor, Scott Tennant, John Williams to name but a few.

DGF has a strong tradition of encouraging young performers and providing opportunities where they can try out new repertoire and gain crucial experience. Since 1997 DGF has run a “Fringe Series” of concerts for this purpose and throughout the year organises a “Young Artists Platform” which has been utilised by many of the UK’s leading conservatoires, providing vital performance opportunities for their young players. This is a small sample of DGF activities; if you would like to find out any more do not hesitate to contact us.

DGF develops opportunities for schoolchildren, and young students by way of reduced rate attendances by way of a bursary scheme for a limited number of students. One aspect of the DGF is that we have always responded to our student base when they have given us their ideas, classes in recording techniques: junior guitar orchestra: chamber classes: teacher discussion groups and composition classes have all been a direct result of their input.

The Concerts

The Classes

This is at the core of the Festival as a result of our commitment to bringing people together to have fun and learn in a constructive and supportive manner. The course has always attracted students of all ages and abilities, introducing many to the pleasures of intensive study, public performances and the overall sharing of ideas. DGF intends to develop on this by establishing “Guitar Clubs” throughout the year in association with Dundee’s education department for schoolchildren, and we hope to develop a “Musicians in Residence” scheme to help bridge the gap for the young players leaving formal education and entering the music profession. One aspect of the DGF is that we have always responded to our student base when they have given us their ideas, classes in recording techniques: junior guitar orchestra: chamber classes: teacher discussion groups and composition classes have all been a direct result of their input.
